World Day against Child Labour 2010: ILO says “Go for the Goal” of eliminating the worst forms of child labour by 2016

GENEVA (ILO News) – As the football World Cup in South Africa kicks off, the International Labour Organization (ILO) is to mark the World Day Against Child Labour with an urgent appeal to “go for the goal – end child labour,” calling particular attention to the target  of eliminating the worst forms of child labour by 2016.

“While billions are caught up in the excitement of the football World Cup, some 215 million children are labouring for survival. Education and play are luxuries for them. Progress towards ending child labour is slowing down and we are not on course to end its worst forms by 2016. We have to get the momentum going again. Let us draw inspiration from the World Cup and rise to the challenge with the energy, the right strategy and the commitment it takes to get to the goal ”, said ILO Director-General Juan Somavia.

Message by Juan Somavia, Director-General of the International Labour Office, on the occasion of World Day for Safety and Health at Work (28 April 2010)
It is time to make a concerted effort to ensure that occupational safety and health is an integral element of strategies for strong, sustainable and balanced development. Workers and their families, enterprises, societies and economies stand to benefit.

Every day some 6,300 people die as a result of work-related injuries or diseases – more than 2.3 million deaths per year. Each of the 337 million workplace accidents that occur each year commonly results in extended absences from work.

The human cost of this daily tragedy is immeasurable. But the economic cost of working days lost, medical treatment and cash benefits paid out is estimated at 4 per cent of global GDP each year. This exceeds the total value of the stimulus packages introduced in the face of the economic crisis of 2008-09.

More women choosing to work, but gender equality remains a long way off

GENEVA (ILO News) – Despite signs of progress in gender equality over the past 15 years, there is still a significant gap between women and men in terms of job opportunities and quality of employment, according to a new report by the International Labour Office (ILO).

The report, entitled Women in labour markets: Measuring progress and identifying challenges, says that more than a decade after the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing adopted an ambitious global platform for action on gender equality and women’s empowerment, gender biases remain deeply embedded in society and the labour market.

The ILO report shows that the rate of female labour force participation has increased from 50.2 to 51.7 per cent between 1980 and 2008, while the male rate decreased slightly from 82.0 to 77.7 per cent. As a result, the gender gap in labour force participation rates has narrowed from 32 to 26 percentage points.

ILO warns "early crisis exit" from stimulus measures could prolong job crisis

GENEVA (ILO News) – An “early exit” from support measures adopted in response to the global economic crisis could postpone a jobs recovery for years and render the fledgling economic upturn “fragile and incomplete”, a new report by the research arm of the International Labour Organization (ILO) says.

In a stark analysis of the impact of the global recession, the ILO’s World of Work Report 2009: The Global Jobs Crisis and Beyond, also projected that unless adequate measures are adopted and in some cases continued, more than 40 million people could drop out of the labour market.

ILO says: The economic crisis is eroding real wages for the second year running

GENEVA (ILO News) – Global growth in real wages slowed dramatically in 2008 as a result of the economic crisis and is expected to drop even further this year despite signs of a possible economic recovery, the International Labour Organization (ILO) said today.

“The continued deterioration of real wages worldwide raises serious questions about the true extent of an economic recovery, especially if government rescue packages are phased out too early. Wage deflation deprives national economies of much needed demand and seriously affects confidence”, said Manuela Tomei, Director, ILO Conditions of Work and Employment Programme and lead author of the study.

Message by Juan Somavia, Director-General of the International Labour Office, on the occasion of the International Day of Cooperatives

4th July 2009 - It is timely to recall the value of cooperatives as we confront the crisis of the global economy.

With the primacy of market values, people, the dignity of work and the social dimension of globalization came to be subordinated to market dictates. And the short term logic of financial markets undermined the longer term horizon of real economy enterprises, including cooperatives. This was unsustainable and remains unacceptable.

The ILO – celebrating its 90th anniversary this year - and the cooperative movement are not strangers to such times. Both were born out of a quest for new ways of countering the individualism of markets and the inequalities and instability associated with market excesses.
