The United Nations Day Celebrated in Kyrgyzstan Print Version
Bishkek, 23 October 2012 – A Press Conference dedicated to the UN Day – celebrated all over the world on 24th of October – was held at the UN House with the participation of the UN Country Team. The Conference was followed by a tree planting activity at the territory of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to symbolize the long and fruitful partnership between the Kyrgyz Republic and the UN system in Kyrgyzstan.
“The UN has always supported initiatives put forward by Kyrgyzstan. With the support from the UN, we have been able to move forward in areas such as sustainable human development, human rights, rule of law and democracy“, - said Erlan Abdyldayev, the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The UN Day has been celebrated annually since 1948, and it marks the anniversary of the UN Charter coming into force in 1945. It was established to highlight the aims and achievements of the UN, but it is not only a day of celebration for the UN system, but to cherish and to thank the countless friends, supporters and partners of the UN as well. As the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated:” Non-governmental organizations, scientists, scholars, philanthropists, religious leaders, business executives and concerned citizens are critical to our success.  No single leader, country or institution can do everything.  But each of us, in our own way, can do something.”
“I would like to mention that the UN system is committed to support and to work with the Government and the people of Kyrgyzstan towards peaceful, sustainable and prosperous future of the country. To conclude, let me reiterate the Secretary General’s remark: On this UN Day, let us reaffirm our individual commitment and our collective resolve to live up to the ideals of the United Nations Charter and build a better world for all”, the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Alexander Avanessov concluded.
Tomorrow the United Nations Day is celebrated in Kyrgyzstan by the UN system, Government, international and national partners and donors in the Ala-Archa State Residence. This year the day is dedicated to the cooperation between the UN and the Kyrgyz Republic, as this year marks the 20th anniversary of Kyrgyzstan joining the United Nations in 1992. The celebrations go under a slogan “United for Peace and Development – 20 Years Together” and highlight the close ties and successful cooperation between the UN system and Kyrgyzstan.
