Model United Nations Launched in Bishkek Send to a friend Print Version
Bishkek, 5 April, 2013 – Today an opening ceremony for a new project "Tien Shan Model United Nations" was held at the UN House in Bishkek. The opening ceremony was participated by the United Nations (UN) representatives, participating organizations, guest speakers, media representatives, and approximately 80 student-participants.
Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation, in which students reenact the work of the United Nations. MUNs are worldwide conferences that annually gather thousands of students. The MUN participants – delegates, chairman, observers and experts – act as official representatives of the UN member states and members of international organizations, who gather to discuss issues on the committee agenda. Each delegate present an official position of the chosen country instead of supporting his/her own personal view. The ultimate goal of each committee is to come up with a resolution on a given issue.

In Bishkek, this is the first Model United Nations simulation. It was organized by an international student-run organization AIESEC with assistance from the American Councils for International Education ACCELS, OSCE Academy, and with the support of the UN system in the Kyrgyz Republic..

The opening ceremony will be continued over the weekend by UN Committee Sessions; by General Assembly, Security Council and The Economic and Social Council. In General Assembly delegates work on solving the issue on Capital Punishment. In Security Council active debates are taking place on the current situation in Syria. For the Economic and Social Council the topic is the European Debt crisis. During the opening ceremony the UN Resident Coordinator a.i. in the Kyrgyz Republic, Mr. Johann Siffointe quoted the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to highlight the meaning of the youth: "Youth have always had ideals. The difference with all of you – is that you can use social network to demand change. You can mobilize...And you can achieve meaningful results". Through this conference the youth of Kyrgyzstan receives a chance to expand their capacities, get mobilized and get a better understanding about development issues and the work on the UN.

The conference will finish in a closing ceremony on Sunday, 7th of April with the awarding of the best delegates of the simulation.
