Kyrgyzstan became a member of the United Nations organization on March 2, 1992. Permanent mission of the UN in Kyrgyzstan was opened in 1993, soon after the Kyrgyz Republic has gained its independence. The aim of the UN in Kyrgyzstan is to assist the Government in implementing the Country Development reforms and provide support in the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by 2015.

The United Nations system in Kyrgyzstan is a coherent whole comprised of strong UN organizations united by a common development framework and recognized by the government, donors and civil society as credible, trusted, effective partner with one voice in areas of its mandate and comparative advantage. Guided by human rights framework, the actions of United Nations system in Kyrgyzstan is designed in full partnership with government and civil society to support their efforts at achieving Internationally Agreed Development Goals, including the MDGs.
