Country Overview
Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked, mountainous country, prone to frequent earthquakes, mudslides and floods. Access in many areas of the country to strategic resources such as water, land and markets is seriously hampered by the lack of reliable transportation links. Following independence in 1991, the Kyrgyz Republic embarked on a transition to a democratic system of governance and a market economy. The country was often described as an “island of democracy” and considered to be ahead among Central Asian states in both democratic and economic reforms.
