About UN in Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan became a member of the United Nations organization on March 2, 1992. Permanent mission of the UN in Kyrgyzstan was opened in 1993, soon after the Kyrgyz Republic has gained its independence The aim of the UN in Kyrgyzstan is to assist the Government in implementing the Country Development reforms and provide support in the achievement of Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

At present, twelve UN Agencies operate in Kyrgyzstan and coordinated by the United Nation Resident Coordinator (UN RC) who is a designated official of the UN Secretary-General.

 

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP ), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF ), United Nations High Commissioner for RefugesInternational Organization for Migration (IOM ), United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR ) and of the Breton Woods Institutions, both the World Bank (WB ), International Monetary Fund (IMF) have full representation in the country while United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA ), led by a Representative who is also the Head of the UNDP.  UNFPA Country Office and Regional Director located in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. (UNHCR ),

The main role of UNV is to mobilize international and national volunteers for development. There are currently 4 international UNV volunteers and 15 national UNV volunteers serving in the country in support of activities implemented by UNDP, UNHCR and UNAIDS. For the most part they are working in local communities in rural areas.

Although not a member of the United Nations system, the Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the Kyrgyz RepublicKyrgyzstan. participates in the meetings of the UN Heads of Agencies, thematic groups, conferences and other activities conducted under the auspices of the United Nations System in

Several UN agencies have in-country activities such as: World Health organization (WHO ), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO ), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC ), International Labour Organization ( ILO ), United Nations Women Fund (UNIFEM ) and United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS ). 

WHO has a country office in Bishkek. The regional representatives of: UNODC based in Tashkent; UNESCO and UNIFEM are in Almaty. Their projects monitored by their regional offices. The regional ILO office based in Moscow, Russia, have a National Coordinator responsible for projects implemented in Kyrgyzstan. 

UN Resident Coordinator’s Unit (UN RC Unit) 

Resident Coordinator (RC) is a designated official of the UN Secretary-General for development operations in the Kyrgyz Republic. RC is responsible for coordination of the entire UN system in the country.
