INTRODUCTION
According to WHO approximately 800 000 people die annually from intentional and unintentional injuries in the European Region. Injuries are the leading cause of death in
persons aged up to 45 years. Injury survivors require emergency medical care and a long period of rehabilitation after receiving treatment. Studies show that injuries, especially road traffic injuries have a disproportionate impact on low income and vulnerable groups of the population. The majority of injury sufferers are people with low income who are unable to receive constant support in the case of a lasting injury and have limited access to post-accident emergency care [90]. Moreover, in many developing countries the costs of prolonged treatment, the loss of a person providing for the family, the cost of a funeral and the loss of income due to disability may cause families to fall into poverty. |
