Crisis requires end to violence and significant humanitarian response

New York/Geneva, (15 June 2010): The continuing violence in Kyrgyzstan has already caused an unacceptably high death and injury toll and sparked confrontation between communities which risks causing a much wider humanitarian crisis in Kyrgyzstan and the region unless the situation is brought under control rapidly.

This crisis requires a concerted response from humanitarian agencies and donors in the coming days and weeks. Flash Appeals are being prepared to cover the most urgent initial needs for displaced people in Kyrgyzstan, particularly in the health and food sectors, and the tens of thousands of refugees in Uzbekistan. Humanitarian agencies are working with the relevant authorities of both countries. Seven humanitarian clusters are being activated in Kyrgyzstan to coordinate the humanitarian assistance in the main sectors of action.
