24 October 2012. We are living through a period of profound turmoil, transition and transformation.  Insecurity, inequality and intolerance are spreading.  Global and national institutions are being put to the test.  With so much at stake, the United Nations must keep pace across the spectrum of its activities – peace, development, human rights, the rule of law, the empowerment of the world’s women and youth.

Bishkek, 23 October 2012 – A Press Conference dedicated to the UN Day – celebrated all over the world on 24th of October – was held at the UN House with the participation of the UN Country Team. The Conference was followed by a tree planting activity at the territory of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to symbolize the long and fruitful partnership between the Kyrgyz Republic and the UN system in Kyrgyzstan.

Bishkek, October 12 2012  – Today members of the Steering Committee of the EU-UN “Operationalising Good Governance for Social Justice” Project gathered for their second meeting in the UN House in Bishkek.  The main objective of the meeting was to review the activities implemented and results achieved over the first year of the project, make strategic decisions on the project implementation, as well as discuss plans for the upcoming period.

Bishkek, 11 October 2012, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund called today for a national campaign to end the harmful traditional practice of early marriage in Kyrgyzstan.

(September 2012). The Kyrgyz Prison Service has recently launched a series of income generating activities in two of its prisons. With the support of the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), a soya milk production line and a sowing workshop have been established in female Prison No.2. A bakery is now operational in male Prison No. 3.

21st of September is the International Peace Day, celebrated all over the world. To mark this day a photo exhibition about the 20 years of cooperation between the United Nations and the Kyrgyz Republic and the UN activities in the country was opened in Bishkek.

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has declared this years’ theme of observance as “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future”, and called on complete cessation of hostilities around the world.

BISHKEK, 14 September 2012 – Miroslav Jenča, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, visited Kyrgyzstan on 13-14 September. 

BISHKEK, KYRGYZSTAN – On 30 August, UNHCR-funded school supplies and financial support were distributed by the Afghan Refugee Women Center “Dusti” to over one hundred refugee and asylum-seeker children residing in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. UNHCR participated in the ceremony that took place in the “Dusti” office.

Bishkek, 22 August, 2012 – The second Workshop of the Summer School of Democracy “Civic Education – 2012” is held in Bishkek from August 20 to August 26.  The official opening ceremony took place today in the amphitheater of the Dostuk Hotel with participation of  representatives of UN, USAID and Soros Foundation-Kyrgyzstan.
