The Department of Safety and Security is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the security management system to enable the safest and most efficient conduct of the activities of the UN System. UNDSS maintains two 24 hour operational radio rooms that offer support to UN operations in Kyrgyzstan. Liaison and close contact between UNDSS and law enforcement, police and security officials further enables the UN to conduct its operations in a secured environment. While the primary responsibility for the safety and security of UN staff rests with the host government, UNDSS contributes in creating a secure environment for the UN staff to operate.

“Staff Security is not a luxury, it is not an option, it is a necessity and an essential part of the cost of doing business.”
Kofi Annan, the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, 1997-2006
